Vesti

I had a web feed reader app called News, which I used to fetch Atom and RSS feeds from my old Nextcloud server. It was a client for a Nextcloud News server, so I just called it News.

I was never happy with Nextcloud, but there were no known alternatives until one user suggested Miniflux. I switched to Miniflux fast and never looked back.

The app gained some traction in FOSS circles, but the name was always a source of confusion. How do you recommend a “news app” when there are a gazillion news apps out there?

Vesti simply means “news” in old Russian, though the name is slightly tainted by a state propaganda outlet. Still, the goal was to find something unique in the Anglosphere, and I think Vesti fits the bill.

So I renamed the app, but it’s still roughly three years out of date. It will probably take me a few weeks to clean things up and publish a new release.

I also got a dedicated domain and created a simple website to be a bit less dependent on GitHub:

https://vestifeed.org/

Feel free to test the preview builds and leave your feedback. I have a few ideas about new features and ethical monetization via an optional paid backend, but more on that later.
